The Pearl Mic is Back

So, during my year-long hiatus from my little space on the web, I had time to think about what I wanted as a woman and as a media professional. After fasting from music and working a couple of marketing jobs, I realized that I REALLY enjoy writing and discussing music, film, food, and style. Lighthearted fun content that brings a smile to my readers’ faces. I like curating content that promotes creativity. With that said, I’ll be updating this blog with fresh content. It may take me some time to get a schedule going, but it’s going to happen.

Also, I am excited to announce that I helped launch a new music venture called MUSIK !D TV!

MUSIK !D TV is for the aspiring and independent musician. We are pulling back the veil of the music industry for the aspiring and independent musician. Our videos and blogs will provide transparent information about the business models for music stores or what we would now call streaming services. You will also read about current events in the market that would affect the music economy and the livelihood of aspiring musicians.
Stay tuned!

An Afternoon at Studio Five08 – Beautiful Machine Track & Field Exhibit

I enjoy the summer because not only do I get to leave work early, but I get to hangout in my favorite cities longer to shop, eat, or just browse. A couple Fridays ago, my sis and I hung out in Santa Monica for an afternoon. We like to park, walk, and make rounds to different businesses. We bond and revel in the moment of being tourists in our town. On that day, we stopped by Studio Five08 to see a photo exhibit called Beautiful Machine. Here are some *snaps from my visit:

Here’s David Brady. He’s the curator of Beautiful Machine and a very talented artist. I can also add comedian to his list of talents because my sister and I laughed as he told his very colorful tales of living in Los Angeles.

Here’s one of my favorite:
Beautiful Machine Exhibit

In our short chat with David, he said that his team may extend the exhibit to the end of August. Please call to confirm before going though.

*FYI, I am not a photographer, nor am I trying to be. I simply wanted to capture the moment.

Goals For The New Year: Belize and a New Job

Hopkins, Belize by Sharon Wagner

Hopkins, Belize by Sharon Wagner

My goal this year is to slowly but surely improve my life. I will start in two simple ways:

1. Go to Belize
2. Get a new Job

My sister and I have never been to Belize City, Belize, our mother’s hometown. We look forward to meeting family members that we’ve’ve never met, and most importantly, taking in the culture. If you know me then you already know that I am interested in checking out the local music, food, fashion and art. I will keep you posted on that, of course.

Like many people I am on a job hunt. My career growth is at a standstill and I am ready for something new. I specialize in social media marketing – specifically community management and blogger outreach. However, I am ready to learn new things and grow in the online marketing field. I enjoy working with exciting brands and meeting new, creative people. I also have experience in Journalism.

If you know about any openings in the Los Angeles area feel free to let me know in the comments section. Check out my LinkedIn profile so you can get the gist of my overall interests.

What are your goals for 2014?

The Writings on the Wall

How many times have you seen something that made you so angry, yet you did not say or do anything? That’s what I did today. I saw two young, black men, looked like they were no more than 16 -18 years old; one was chunky and brown like cinnamon and the other was lean and dark as licorice. They walked down the street with much haste. I thought they were hopping on the same bus as me, but, no, that was not it at all.

Licorce threw cinnamon a can of blue spray paint; and he proceeded to spray out the name of his Crip gang in 5 feet tall letters on the side of a hair salon – in broad daylight – in front of people. He hit his blunt hard and passed it to licorice as he continued to tag. His blue boxers peeked out from his black jeans as he reached and stretched to get every crevice of the peach-colored building. I wanted to shout:

STOP! DO YOU LOVE YOURSELF?! DO YOU HAVE ANY PRIDE IN YOUR COMMUNITY?! DON’T YOU WANT TO MAKE IT BETTER FOR GENERATIONS TO COME?! STOP BEING A STEREOTYPE! STOP SHITTING WHERE YOU SLEEP!

Cinnamon threw the can of spray paint back to licorice, and he passed the blunt back to licorice with so much care. If only they cared for their block like they cared for that little piece of weed, the streets might be safer, businesses will come back, and a place people want to live by choice. Licorice giggled as he began to tag. Surprisingly, he found more space to claim his crew. They were not fazed at all; simply oblivious to the four appalled people at the bus stop, the passing traffic, and duh, the cops! I wanted to shout:

I WANT SOUTH CENTRAL TO CHANGE MY BROTHAS, MY PRECIOUS BROTHAS. STAND FOR SOMETHING OF MERIT? STOP BEING MESMERIZED BY THE BOOTIES AND BLUNTS. EDUCATE YOURSELF, OWN BUSINESES, STAY HEALTHY, WORK HARD!

As angry as I was, I wanted to hug them like a mother, cuss them out like a sister, and lift them up like a preacher.

But I just stood there and shook my head.

Are You Living Your Eulogy or Your Resume? Thoughts on Arianna Huffington’s Latest Article

I read a riveting article by Arianna Huffington, President and Editor-in-Chief of The Huffington Post titled, “Are You Living Your Eulogy or Your Resume?” The article described those of us who place a priority on career success and not cultivating relationships, enjoying life, developing positive personal character, etc. Basically, if someone were to eulogize you, what would they say? Here is a little nugget that stuck out:

Have you noticed that when people die, their eulogies celebrate life very differently from the way we define success in our everyday existence?…For most of us, our eulogy will be not just the first formal marking down of what our lives were about but the only one. The eulogy is the foundational document of our legacy, of how people remember us, of how we live on in the minds and hearts of others.

There is nothing wrong with career success, however, I think our generation is more absorbed with status and the who-is-who instead of making life more memorable. It is time to start pursuing passions, no matter how silly they are. Picking up that phone and calling an old friend. How about spending more time with loved ones and stop taking them for granted.

What do your eulogy would say about you? I know it is a bit weird to think about, but take a moment to reflect on it and share your thoughts.
